Homes in Greece and other sunbaked countries are regularly painted white
to reflect as much sunlight as possible. Researchers are building on that
age-old strategy with a new wave of "passive radiative cooling" materials
that shed sunlight and heat. They do so by first reflecting nearly all
the light that hits them and also radiating away energy at wavelengths
that aren't absorbed by the surrounding air. Most of these materials are
not easy to apply to existing roofs and walls, but a team of U.S.
researchers has now created a cooling paint that can coat just about any
surface, dropping its temperature by 6°C.
